Boarderland Games 40k Tournament: 1500 + 500 Sidebars
Well this past weekend I went to a tournament in Greenville, SC at Borderland Games. I was going to write a full battle report but I forgot to take pictures of each game and 2 of the 3 games I shot the shit with the other guy so much I couldn't remember most of what happened. First let me start by saying the group of people at this event seem to be all good players. The store is a great store and honestly one of the biggest I have been in for a long time. Also I had the pleasure of meeting Larry from the 11th company Pod cast. I was not a fan of the 1500 main list and 2 500 point side bars. It really limited me on what I wanted to do. But all in all good fun great store and good people. Here are the general rules and missions for the event.
Each player will create a fully legal 1500 point army “parent” list from any of the current 40k codexes (including the new Grey Knights). This list must come from one force organization chart and follow all normal rules (1 HQ, 2 Troop, not exceed the points limit, etc.).
In addition, each player may also bring 2, 500 point “sidebars.” These need not be legal lists on their own, but each separate sidebar must be able to combine legally with the parent list to create a total legal army list of 2000 points. The sidebars, however, must be composed of whole units. It may not “upgrade” units in the main list (you cannot add melta bombs to your commander, add dedicated transports, etc from your sidebars).
In each round, you will reveal your 1500 point list to your opponent. You each will then secretly choose which sidebar to use and reveal them to each other at the same time. You will then play a normal 2000 point game using the attached missions.
Alternatively, if you do not wish to or cannot use a sidebar, a single, 2000 point list is also legal for this tournament.

Mission 1
Length: Random Game Length
Deployment: Spearhead (Table quarters, both sides 12 inches from the center)
Objective 1 - Have the most Victory Points of any type of unit FULLY within your opponents deployment zone. Follow the rulebook's methods of determining “half-point” units. If the total victory point difference is less than 50 points, this objective is considered drawn. (Win = 10 points Tie = 5 points Loss = 0 points)
Objective 2 – Control more terrain elements than your opponent. To control a terrain element, you must have models from a scoring unit ON or TOUCHING an uncontested terrain element. Individual scoring units may control/contest multiple pieces of terrain. All other units may contest multiple terrain pieces. Wrecked vehicles are NOT considered terrain elements for this objectives. Be sure to discuss what “counts as” a terrain feature with your opponent before deciding deployment zones. (Win = 10 points Tie = 5 points Loss = 0 points)
Objective 3 – Kill Points. The player with the most kill points as defined by the rulebook with this objective. (Win = 10 points Tie = 5 points Loss = 0 points)
Bonus #1 (2pts) – If ALL of your troop units are at half strength or above, you achieve this objective. Dedicated transports have no bearing on this.
Bonus #2 (2pts) – If ALL of your HQ units (including dedicated transports) are alive at the end of the game (on the table and not falling back), you achieve this objective.
Bonus #3 (1pt) – If ALL of your units from your chosen sidebar in this mission are alive at the end of game, you achieve this objective.
Wipeout: If you table your opponent, you may finish your turns to achieve whatever objectives are possible.
In this game I went against a Blood angels player that was painted and modeled so well I was temped to start a BA army. Good game but he beat me down really badly. Also Blood talons hurt orks!
Mission 2
Length: Random Game Length
Deployment – Pitched Battle (Units must be wholly within 12 inches of the deployment board edge)
Objective 1 - Have the most Victory Points of any type of unit FULLY within 6 inches of the center of the table. Follow the rulebook's methods of determining “half-point” units. If the total victory point difference is less than 50 points, this objective is considered drawn. (Win = 10 points Tie = 5 points Loss = 0 points)
Objective 2 – Have scoring units bearing Vital Equipment tokens FULLY within your opponents deployment zone. (During deployment, you will assign 2 scoring units to be carrying “vital equipment.” These units behave normally throughout the game. If destroyed, the token is also destroyed. It may not be dropped or transferred in any way.) Both players may achieve this objective. (Both objectives = 10 points One Objective = 5 points Zero Objectives = 0 points
Objective 3 – Destroy ALL units (including dedicated transports) from your opponent's chosen sidebar list. Units falling back at the end of the game are considered destroyed. If a unit from the sidebar is identical to a unit in the parent list, mark the “sidebar unit” during deployment. Both players may achieve this objective. (All sidebar units destroyed = 10 points; Sidebar units not destroyed = 0 points)
In this game I went against Larry from the 11th company. He had a Missile Launcher Spam Space Wolf list. Really nasty and hard list for a Mech Ork army to face. In the end We came up almost a tie.
Mission 3
Length: Random Game Length
Deployment: Dawn of War deployment (follow rulebook's instructions)
Objective 1 - Control more table quarters than your opponent. To control a table quarter, have a scoring unit from your army in an uncontested quarter. To contest a quarter, you must have any non-destroyed unit present in a table quarter. (Win = 10 points Tie = 5 points Loss = 0 points)
Objective 2 – Control more objective markers than your opponent. (During deployment, you will each place one objective in YOUR OWN deployment zone, at least 12 inches from any board edge and at least 18 inches from the other objective marker) (Win = 10 points Tie = 5 points Loss = 0 points)
Objective 3 – Destroy all models from your opponent's highest-point HQ force organization slot. Dedicated transports do count for this objective. A unit falling back at the end of the game IS considered destroyed. Both players may achieve this objective. (Opponent's highest point HQ destroyed = 10 points; Opponent's highest-point HQ still alive = 0 points)
This game I went against a Chaos player now when I saw his army I wasn't impressed with the list and wasn't afraid of it at all. My problem was his Deamon Princes where modeled out of Chaos Terminators. He claimed cover and full LOS blockage from his rhinos. After about 5 minutes of showing him you CAN'T do that he got all pissy and we went on with the game. In the end he got tabled then claimed we tied....
Also in this tournament was a painting contest. Now I only have 1 army full painted and it is my Iron Warriors. But some of the armies were very nicely painted. Here are most of the armies on display during the lunch break (when I did remember to take pictures).
